SUSE 9.1 pro DVD, FTP version?

Hello,

I have come across couple of websites selling SuSE 9.1 pro DVD (ftp version DVD?) for about $12 to 15€. My understanding was SuSE 9.1 pro was not available for free distribution on cd/dvd, and had to be installed via ftp?

Bootable DVD based on ftp files would help so that the files don’t have to be downloaded again for every install. With a 5 to 6 KB/s connection that I have, I would not even attempt!

If it is OK (IS IT?) to build/distribute SuSE 9.1 pro dvd based on ftp files from SuSE website, would the procedure for creating a bootable 9.1 pro dvd for installing SuSE be documented? Links or pointers on how to get started would be appreciated. Or if the procedure is complicated (I am a newbie), is there a bit torrent link for such a DVD ISO?

Thanks but no thanks, I am not interested in warez or illegal downloads of SuSE 9.1 Pro, just the FTP version if it is OK to so.

Thanks
Fischer

As you already indicated, you are correct that Suse's policy is to NOT make their installation images available for free download. If you want Suse 9.1, you either need to buy it from a retailer, or perform an FTP installation. If you buy these unauthorized Suse DVD's, you won't know what you'll actually be getting, and you could very well be throwing your money away because you cannot trust their validity/integrity, and you could be installing a compromised system. In short, don't do it.

Installing Suse 9.1 via FTP to a mirror site is permitted and perfectly legit. Personally, what I'd recommend doing assuming you've got a second hard drive or another machine is to just download then entire installation tree from the mirror site to your local disk, then installing off of that. If something goes wrong, you can just start the installation process again without having to spend all that time re-downloading everything. (You will need to download approx 3.3G of data. Even with a fast connection, just doing the d/l will take a long time -- as I said, you only want to have to do it once, so I that's why I recommend doing it first, then installing off your local drive.)

As for instructions on how to begin, etc, you can find materials at the Suse website. Good luck with it. Personally I am impressed with Suse 9.1 -- J.W.

These would be bootleg copies. Not right.

Hell, by the time you got 9.1 downloaded 10.0 would be out
