SuSE 9.1 Personal - KDE hangs at "Initializing Peripherals"
Hello,
Here's how it goes: My system starts at runlevel 3. I log in as root, do telinit 5, then from the graphical menu log in as a regular user. As KDE loads, it always hangs the system at 42% complete, in the "Initializing Peripherals" stage. So I haven't been able to use X yet on this installation.
I had a few USB peripherals attached when I installed SuSE, and I've tried booting with all of them attached and with none of them attached. I always boot with noapic, and I've tried booting with different combinations of safe mode options, to no avail. Switching to the error console when KDE is starting, I see no relevant information printed.
I've already installed every available patch using YaST. Any suggestions?

Originally posted by bruno buys does it happen with other users, or only root? Try to log in with a normal account.
Thanks for the advice. I logged in with a normal account and used startx. This time it froze at Initializing System Services, 28%. So the username is a variable here.
I also tried, as root, using startx as instead of telinit 5. It froze at the same Peripherals part as before -- only difference was that it bypassed the graphical logon screen.
To be honest, I don't know what can be causing this. If I were you, I would try to figure out if the problem persists when changing things:
- Can you download a live cd and test it?
- You can try to remove the .kde dir inside your /home and see what happens. Sometimes, a forced reboot leaves files opened that cause this. If you remove it, you will loose any customization you made to kde, but may be worth. You don't actually have to remove it, just rename to, say, .kde.old, and next time you load kde it will create a new one without any files from the last attempt.

I had a similar problem with KDE hanging while initializing peripherals. This happened after I bought a new computer desk and moved my computer to it. I had the same problem for all users except for root. When I connected my printer to the same usb port it was hooked to before it booted perfectly. It seems that KDE gets confuzzled if you connect a peripheral to a different usb port than it was originally hooked to.
