Here is the latest problem. Installed Tulpas while running KDE. Tulpas is obviously a Gnome app, because now that I installed it, my KDE seems to be some crossbreed of KDE and Gnome. The desktop, icons, menus and what not are all Gnome in appearance while the toolbar and the kicker are still of the KDE flavor. When I browse to my home folder, it is all of the Gnome sorts. What happened? Is there any way to fix it?
Tulpas is just a game isn't it? This shouldn't have done anything to your KDE setup... Have you logged out and back in, maybe it was a glitch in nautilus. Or maybe Tulpas requires nautilus to be open to run. That's odd behavior though, check TOP to see if you can find out what else is starting when you run tulpas.
Oh, and let us know if Tulpas is indeed a Pool game or if it's something else.
i had the same problem after i installed anjuta, it's like kdm and gdm are both running in the same space. you may want to reset kde back to it's default settings. http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/wessels_kdedefault.html
Tulpas is indeed a pool game, obviously designed for Gnome. I have actually already reinstalled which took care of the problem, but the same thing happened in KDE as root. I dont recall what I had installed, but anytime I logged in as root it did the same thing as described earlier. Note to self: dont install any Gnome apps! Note noted.
I think that's a pitty (spelling?) really. Limited now by what, half, of all the apps out there because of a glitch. Here's what I suggest (assuming you checked the mailing lists and such):
I'd first recreate the problem, get a few screenshots, and then join the mail-list or find a way to submit a bug/question to the author of the program in question. From there advise them of the problem, let them know you have screenshots if they want examples and then see if it gets fixed. I would suspect that the author will be happy with you alerting them of this, and maybe even give you credit if it's an actual bug.
Anyway, that's probably what I'd do if this happened to me on my system.
Good Luck, and try not to re-install when things like this happen; that's the winway, fixing the problem is the linway
I truly understand. I was actually under the impression that maybe I had screwed things up some where because it happened as root, and as user,. I even created another user, and for this new user, no apps would open! So I figured I hosed my system. I will take your advice, and I will try to recreate the problem, and hopefully I can learn some stuff while I work through it. Thank you for the reprimand, sometimes that is what is needed!! Anyhow, I am trying to get 100% Windows free, and once I get this running as bug free as possible, I have just about got my wife convinced to make the plunge. Everybody's help is much appreciated.
I had the same problem when I first installed SuSE 8.0. I installed some app, forget what it was, and ended up with a cross bred part Gnome, part KDE desktop. I also fixed it by reinstalling the OS. If you install the Gnome desktop package the problem doesn't seem to happen. Gnome is kind of funny looking in SuSE when you first fire it up, it is basically a blank screen. You have to add applets and buttons and stuff untill you get it the way you want it. Kind of cool actually.
So when you installed Gnome, you never got the cross breed thing again? Interesting,. When I did my reinstall I didn't install Gnome just to make sure that didn't happen again. I will have to install and try to load a Gnome app. Just out of curiosity, what OS do you run now?
I am currently running Mandrake 9.0 but I still have SuSE loaded on another HDD. I think I like SuSE a little better but that could just be because I'm used to it. I like Mandrake also, my main complaint about it is that it doesn't use Kinternet to connect to the internet. The KPPP connection applet works OK but kinternet is better. Also SuSE came with abiword, which I like.
I have some other distros on order and am looking forward to trying them. I am a newbie and not real knowlegable about linux but am slowly learning, usually the hard way.
Just out of cutiosity, what other distros are you getting? I have tried alot out, and there are some I want to try. I am curious to know your opinion or if you have tried them. ELX, Knoppix, Lycoris, Libranet, Red Hat, Mandrake, and SuSe 8.1 are the ones I have tried, and by far I like SuSe the best. I just wish it was better supported by the community!! Atleast Mandrake has its own forum!! www.mandrakeusers.org Wish Suse had one like this!!
I have Lycoris and Phatlinux on order, should be here in a day or two. I also want to try ELX, Debian, Peanut, Slackware (may wait until I have a little more experience before wading into that), Red Hat, and perhaps FreeBSD. How did you like Lycoris?
I actually liked it alot. It only has KDE 2, so the eye candy is minimal. There is no Gnome, and if you have onboard sound, good luck, depending of course on how close it mimics Sound blaster. It has a wonderful user interface though. Alot of ideas taken from MS and applied into a Linux world, so you have decent concepts with 'nix stability. Plus they have probably the best user forum out there. I like mandrakeusers.org, but lycoris.org blows them away. As soon as Lycoris comes out with there next major update, I will probably set up a dual boot with SUSE. Its called Beryl, but they say it is going to be awhile. It is all Debian based, so that is a plus. Do yourself a favor though and be sure to install the 3rd Dev tools cd. It is the only way you can install stuff from a terminal. All in all, a really nice distro geared to the newbie in us all!!!
don't know if anyone still cares, but the problem is caused by nautilus. even if you didn't choose to install it, somtimes it gets installed because some gnome apps depend on it. that being said, there is a setting in nautilus that say's 'use nautilus to render desktop' , that needs to be turned off.
