Suse 8.0: xv hangs box

Hello all,

I have recently installed Suse 8.0, running the default Suse 2.4.18-4G kernel, windowmaker window manager, XFree86 4.02.

I was using ext2 filesystems and decided to change to ext3 which seemed to work okay. BUT: after using John Bradley's xv for a while the box hangs hard: keyboard lights flashing, no response from mouse or keyboard, can't ping or ssh in from outside. Only power off button works. After reboot and repairs to filesystems (ran e2fsck to be sure) used tune2fs to remove ext3 journals again. Now xv runs seemingly without a problem again. Never had a problem with xv or ext2 on 2.2.20 kernels.

Has anyone seen this before? What is happening?
Any suggestions appreciated.
