I have always been a Windows user, but it was my birthday last Sunday and for it I got SuSE 8 Pro, I thought it was about time I moved to try a UNIX based OS and decided to go with that distro of Linux.
I have never been much of a hardware person, being much more of a programmer than ever I knew about what my computer was actually made up of. Now, I need to get my modem working on suse, if at all possible without buying a new one. Here is all the modem stuff I can find on my computer:
Sorry, but thats about as much as I know. I now have windows and suse on dual boot. I cant seem to be able to configure my modem to work, not that I know where to start. Id use Linux 80% of the time if I could use the net on it, but without its more like 15%.
If you need any other info, please ask, I know this sounds very vague, sorry.
start yast2 , select ->network/basic->modem configuration. yast will try to autodetect your modem. if SUSE detected your modem, select configure and follow the prompts. if your isp is not on the list(most aren't) choose ->custom->add, and fill in the phone number, username, etc.
if yast can't find your modem, then it's probably a winmodem. some winmodems can be made to work, but are not really worth the aggravation.
Yeah, I ended up there, and it didn't auto detect it, plus I'm pretty sure it is a winmodem.
I know there are ways to get them to work, could you or someone please try and give me an idea of how I'd go about doing this if it is indeed possible with mine, apart from directing me to linmodems?
If not, how much will a suse compatible modem set me back?
Try to find out what kind of Modem u have. I have a c presario and u might have a connexant typemodem. If it is the case u hae drivers that u can download on the connexant site to make your modem run underLINUX. May i add that I am also running SUSE
If it is a pci modem it's pretty sure it is a winmodem. If that's the case just look up at the chipset in the modem card and go to www.linmodems.org and try to get the source code of the "drivers" for it. That source code will probably come with some scripts to help you installing your modem. That was just my case under RH6 and 7.2 and it IS just my case with SUSE 7.2.
Best Regards.
