Quiet stable

I tried SuSE for awhile, I even purchased the Professional Boxed Set but everytime I tried to run StarOffice my box would freeze. The only way to shut down without hitting the power button was to telnet from another box and kill X. I figured their was a conflict with my X server so I reverted back to 3.3.6 and still had the same problem. I also tried installing StarOffice both from the included CD and also downloading the file from Sun. Both times I got the same result.

Also during the install it did not recoginze my CD burner. It only recogizes it as a standard CD.

I finally got fed up and downloaded 'Drake 8.0. I can only say one thing...it is sweet.

The install recognized my printer, my burner, and my Promise Controller card. I've already burned my first CDs from Drake, the only thing I've got to get working now is my scanner, which shouldn't be too hard.

I really did like SuSE, YaST2 was awesome, but to crash and burn while running software that they've included in their package is to me unexcusable.

I use SuSE Linux 7.1 and I have a CD Burner, and a Promise Ultra100 controller card too.
Suse is always gonna detect your cd burner as a normal cd reader unless you specify it as a SCSI device on "YaST --> System Administration --> Kernel/Boot Configuration --> Configure LILO --> Append Line for Hardware Parameter" with "hdd=ide-scsi" where your cd burner is the slave on IDE2. Afterwards you need to change the device from "/dev/hdd" to "/dev/scd0" and all cd burning programs should detect it properly as a SCSI device.

The Promise card should be detected from SuSE 7.0 and above without problems via SuSE's kernel.

But I'm blank about StarOffice, it works fine on my system.

Diito here. But i did swap out some SDRAM after some lame encoding went 'bonk' on me. No prob after the switch. Better RAM is always yummy.
