Pretty much any distro will work fine. openSUSE Tumbleweed works perfectly on the one I have, and others have reported Mint and Ubuntu also work. And you can also run a live distro from USB, to see if everything works.

I can only tell you that openSUSE Tumbleweed worked great for me. However, I do think it's important to note that the touch part worked fine...as in, tap to select/drag/open, but I did NOT test the stylus pressure gradient part. From what I understand, the Surface stylus has pressure gradients, so when you're doing digital art, you can 'push harder', to simulate more pressure on a brush/pen.

hi TB0ne
i installed openSUSE Tumbleweed latest, it was a little difficult with efi but i got it installed with help.
i have had no luck with the touch screen working, i know you can compile a kernel, and install repos.
i would like to get it working, but i afraid of messing the install up.
what did you do to get your surface working?
i did get crunchbangplusplus11 installed, and used the pre compiled kernel and added the repos. from :
https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface
in crunchbangplusspluss11 all works fine.
the print is very small, and if you change the screen resolution with randr it throes the touch pin off.
i haven't found a way to calibrate the pin.
