Suggest me Linux that runs from RAM and can save changes to USB

So I have a windows 7 laptop but when I open like 15 or so tabs on my chrome and the laptop has been on for some time it becomes really slow at times and freezes a lot etc. I'm pretty sure my HD is problematic because it worked fine when the laptop was newer.

Anyways, I am now looking for a Linux that copies itself entirely into the RAM so that the reading/writing of data (using web browser) would be faster. I also want the linux to write the changes (programs installed, settings changed etc) onto the USB from where I booted it from.

I have tried Porteus thus far and it had nice firefox speed but when I opened some program it was thinking for like 2-3 sec.. which is something that should not happen (simple program like text editor, file browser, terminal etc). Also my touchpad did not work with it and some programs failed to launch.

I'd suggest trying MINT via LiveCD/DVD or USB. I just don't know if there's a way to save settings and state information to USB excepting manually. I'm not a big Live distro user except to try and see and then install permanently once I make a decision.

My main reason for writing is that most newer drives have S.M.A.R.T. capabilities and whether through Windows or Linux, you should be able to run some SMART tools to view and analyze your disk's information. I don't feel that it will tell you the disk is xx hours away from failing, but it will give you some probabilities and let you know how long the disk has been in use, plus the condition of the disk right now.

If you really suspect that disk, I'd suggest replacement. Yes, I get it that the Windows distribution may be invalidated.

TinyCore is fantastic for this, but requires some setting up.

Puppy (or FatDog) also spring to mind.

EDIT: You could also consider placing the browser profile in tmpfs using profile-sync-daemon:

There are three Linux distros actually designed for that: Knoppix, Puppy, Slax
