Strange CD-ROM access problems with Mandy 8.2

Mandrake 8.2 seems to have problems with accessing the CD-ROM every now and then. Eg. Sometimes you can access/see the files and directories and somtimes you can't.

I didn't have this type of problem with Mandrake 8.0, but I do with 8.2 on two different machines (with different hardware).

here's the contents of /etc/fstab of Mandy 8.2

none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15 0 0

/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=vfat,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,codepage=850 0 0

none /proc proc defaults 0 0

/dev/hda2 /usr ext3 noatime 1 1

/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

That sounds like a possible hardware problem. Maybe you can take appart the CD-ROM and blast it with air or something else that is ozone-friendly.

Do you, by chance, have a CD-RW drive?

If you do, you have some configuration to do with pretent-SCSI (see www.linuxdoc.org).

I upgraded from a normal CD drive to a CD-RW drive and I had the same sort of errors.

Don't worry I've reinstalled Mandy 8.0 and don't have the problem any more. I think it's probably because of the differences in the fstab file (located in the /etc directory). Here's the contents of the fstab on Mandy 8.0.

Mandy 8.0 works no probs with the auto mounting, so I can't see what the problem is???
