Startup volume in Vector Lite Linux
 

When I startup my Vector Lite operating system the startup sounds are very loud. I haven't been able to find a way of reducing the volume coming out of the speakers. I have found the site where the "startup.wav" file is stored and I have thought of rerecording it at a lower volume and replacing the default file with a modified one but I would like to be able to just set the startup volume to about half of what it is presently.

I thought the startup volume was controlled by the aumix program. According to the "man aumix" document, the sound is set by a file called "aumixrc" which is found at /home/myuserAccount/.aumixrc or in /etc/aumixrc In those two files there is a setting for volume which is
vol:/6/6/R I changed both of the files so they read vol:/3/3/R but this doesn't change the volume coming out the speakers.

Does anyone know how to change the startup volume so it isn't so loud?

Please try this command : alsamixer

After setting the "volume control",
the settings can be saved with :

1) su
2) alsactl store

Thank you for your suggestion. I used the alsamixer command without any problem that I could see to bring up the interface. Then I adjusted the volume on the master section setting it to 1/2 what it was originally. Then I exited the program using the "esc" key. Then I typed "su" and entered my password so I could work as "root". Then I typed in alsacti store and hit "enter". The message I received was that this was not a recognized command.

I went back to the GUI and brought up the "sound mixer" program. The master sound level was lowered as expected. Then I rebooted. The alsamixer program did not keep my lowered settings.

Do you have any other suggestions?

I will try to look for any documentation that I can that might tell me how to save the settings I made to the alsamixer program.

Yes, you are right : It is a wrong command.

ALSACTL STORE : But lower case, will work

Always please copy / paste a text to an editor
with different types, if any chance, it can be
misread / misspelled.

And of course no reason to type a full command :
Type alsact<TAB> : Bash completion will fill out
the missing letter(s).
( als<TAB> will show like six alsa commands.)

Alternatively copy / paste the complete command
to the command line.

Thank you for your reply Knudfi. Thank you for explaining why my input was not working and what I should have done to input the correct command. I followed your directions to type in the correct command. When I used it, I did not get any message saying that it was incorrect. I checked the settings on the alsamixer after I tried to store the new volume setting. It was lower as it should be. Then I rebooted my system and checked the alsamixer settings again. This time the settings were still high so apparently that did not permanently change the settings on the alsamixer. Thank you very much for your suggestions however. If you have any other suggestions I would like to try them but I have found a reasonable "workaround". I have replaced the MS-Windows startup sound I had been using with another recording from my Windows XP operating system that is short and yet still lets me know that the bootup process has been completed.
