Standards conforming distros.

I had been using Mandrake9.2, but due to 'seeming' non conformance with Linux directory structure, I couldnt compile any SDL apps. I want to learn to develope on linux.

I have read that SuSE is both LSB (linux standard base) compliant, as well as LFH (Linux filesystem heirarchy) compliant. (Mandrake only complies with the former).

I had originally assumed that LSB would be an all encompassing standard.

Does anyone know of a distro that is suitable for development, for non linux gurus? I could not install slackware (as an example of what I find difficult), but RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake, Debian, Fedora - all installed easily.

Hope I've made my question relatively clear :)

Thanks in advance for any replies,

unholy

I used SuSE for about three years. I think that the two distributions that are the most "technically correct" are SuSE and Debian. Mandrake is biased toward ease of installation to the point that it is not very "user friendly" if you happen to be a power user.

I would recommend that you use SuSE or Debian for serious development work. Both SuSE and Debian stand somewhere between the extremes of Mandrake and Slackware for ease of installation but they should be well within the capabilities of a non Linux programmer to master fairly quickly.
