I have speedtouch 330 running successfully on SuSE 9.1. Do you have 9.1 personal or professional? How did you install speedtouchconf and did the installation routine go as it should have?
You may need to change some files to get it to work OK. Open /etc/speedtouch.conf in an editor and change the following -
LOAD_USBCORE=1 to LOAD_USBCORE=0
and
DEFAULT_USBINTERFACE="uhsb-uhci" to DEFAULT_USBINTERFACE="uhci-hcd"
That should do the trick if your speedtouchconf install has gone OK.
also my first post I am a beta tester for xp and a power user but fed up with the company that gives nothing back
on my 9.1 personal it looks easy to install this 330 but my problem is the keyboard wont let me change it in to uk/typing so cant get the @ to come up will try try copying and pasting on to a floppy, at the mo.it looks like greek how do you change the typo errors please?
Bunter, I'm not sure why you need the @. But, go to Control Centre > Regional & Accessibility > Keyboard layout and you should be able to set your key board.
thanks m8 yes I need it because in linux 9.1 it wont let me use the @ key it comes out with a capital A with 2 little dots above it and have tried setting it with your above helpfull comments.
plus as more will read this thread please be aware if your trying to use a duel boot with windows the linux install wiped my MBR=master boot record do a google search for the fix before it ends up wipping my hidden partions,,,lol
it still wont put me off trying linux mucked about with it last night and it does offer better OS than xp + its free not that it was`nt with xp either mind you
DEFAULT_USBINTERFACE="uhsb-uhci" to DEFAULT_USBINTERFACE="uhci-hcd"

hi:
i´ve the personal distro.
Thanx a lot for your tip, but it doesn't work. This is the msg i have when i do the speedtouchconf script:
No further user interaction is required.
Configuring SpeedTouch Driver...
Software Configuration - SUCCESS
Building SpeedTouch Driver...
Software Build - SUCCESS
Installing SpeedTouch Driver...
Software Installation - SUCCESS
Creating ppp files in //etc/ppp
*** Configuration finished. Starting the connection ***
The modem lights should start flashing for approx. 20 seconds...
The modem_run command failed (code 240)
modem_run results:
Unable to locate firmware
If you have a silver modem, make sure you're using rev4fw.zip http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/rev4fw.zip
FAILED because of modem_run error 240
after this is always the Timed Out.
The strange thing is that i've followed the instructions on the speedtouchconf site and when the modem starts tells me that don´t find de "rev4fw.zip". This should bein the same folder/directory of the script.
Another question:
How do i do to erase all the configurations for this Speedtouch 330?
i´ve all that s**t in the directories. I don't understant wy this msg.
there is about 3 directories called speedtouch in the system and i think í've put the firmware in everyone.
Can i erase all that directories and start the process again.
Often a good thing to do - delete all the directories and start over again from a clean slate. You should have one speedtouchconf directory (in which the you should put the firmware copied from /windows/C/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/alcaudsl.sys) and run the shell script from it. That will create /etc/speedtouch.conf which you will need to edit.
I tried the same thing after installing 9.1 Personal. I un zipped (or untarred whatever) the Zip file from Sourceforge, and then copied the alcadsl.sys file that I got from the Windows/Program files dir.
Did I forget to put the firmware zip file into this folder?
I downloaded that from Thomson's site, not the file mentioned in the earlier posts. also, is it correct that I don't unzip the firmware file, but rather move it to inside the speetouch folder?
If these are the only mistakes I've made, then pls let me know!
I also think I'm not running the speedtouch.sh script right. How do I get into Root to run the script? I've been ging into Konsole, enetering the root password I set up and then 'drag & drop' the speedtouch.sh file onto it, it start sto run, just like the previous post, except I get a message along the lines of
'some file not here, you need to get these from the Internet or Linux'
and
'pls check where you are running this file from, it appears to be.... then gives details like usr/bin/ewan/ etc
Can someone pls let me know where I'm going wrong, have i:
1) forgot to paste the firmware Zip into the Speedtouch folder? and
2) not been running the speedtouch.sh file from root?
Well, I said I would let you know how I got on. IT DIDN'T WORK
Then, purely by chance, I happened on this review of the boxed 9.1 on Amazon
"However, if you want to install any serious hardware such as USB ADSL modems (for broadband), don't get Personal Edition as it lacks some basic modules such as 'make', 'gcc' and 'glibc-devel' which are needed in order to compile drivers into the kernel: get Professional Edition instead. Also, the new kernel (2.6) has some major differences under-the-bonnet to older versions, especially USB support; as such new hardware may not work with it until drivers have caught up, so you may find 8.2 easier to configure (kernel 2.4)."
SO WHY THE HELL DIDN'T ANYONE TELL US????????? Look, I am all for using Linux, this is the second time I've really tried to give it a go, but this whole "hey man, it's open source, you'll get loads of help, no really, REALLY f&&ks me off.
How on Earth are newbies expected to convert their friends when it all boils down to paying these companies for the software (isn't that what everyone slags Microsoft off for?). Unfortunately I do not have the luxury of an IT background, and fell for the numerous sites and forums and posts regailing Linux as the best thing and that Windows' days are numbered.
Sadly, I've discovered yet again that like most things in life, nothing good ever comes for free. Now, I am sure there are a good many people on Linux who do a great job and help people out. But this comes at a price of a huge amount of sh1t info too (which I have rather naively followed) written by arrogant tw8ts who I am sure will be the same people who post narrow-minded replies to this post.
If that is the case, and before you get tapping away, ask yourself one question - have you ever been really let down by someone or something you thought would be great? If your answer is yes, then you'll appreciate how I feel right now. If you answer no, you are a liar.
I'll make you a promise, if I ever get Linux to work for me as a home desktop and OS that I can control, I will post a new message telling you exactly how I did it. It might not work for everyone, but there are 6 billion people on Earth, so odds are it'll work for a few.!!!
