Are there any distributions for which I can get a source tree like in the BSDs? As in the whole system was pretty minimalistic and I had all of it's sources in a given directory, where I could CVS a new version every now and then?

Well, I am not experienced with BSD, but Linux distro's do come with a source CD. Usually during the install, you can isntall the source as well.

The is nothing really analogous to the ports system, but apt-get from Debian is very nice.
