Source-based distro's?

Can some members here fill me in on what happened to "Sorcerer" and "SourceMage"?
Now that I am learning Slackware-I see the purpose behind building your own packages, etc.
I know that Lunar Linux is source-based and I believe based off of either Sorcerer or SourceMage-is that right?
Besides Slackware-what other source-based distro's are there and are they current?
I want to install Lunar today, so looking for opinions??
Thanks!

You dont have to ask in the Slackware forum then.
PS. Slackware is not a source based distribution.

Source Mage seems to be still available.

Google will show you lots of references to source based distros.

Slackware, however, is not source based.

My mistake-so what are the diff's between Slackware and source-based?
Sorcerer seems pretty cool-is SourceMage similar-and what about Lunar?
Anybody know if SourceMage is the child of Sorcerer?
What's the jump from Slackware to SourceMage entail??
I know some of you 10+years experience Linux users have had to try or look into source-based distro's-what's the pro's vs con's between Slackware and source-based?

This is from linux.com
Quote:
"Source-based" means you compile the operating system and its applications from source code, rather than installing binary packages. As a result, you can build a system that's optimized for your individual machine. Source-based distributions, as a general rule, require more time to install and maintain that normal distributions.
Slackware ships procompiled binaries and so is obviously not a source based distro.

I can't comment on the SourceMage/Lunar distros as I have no experience.

You may like looking at Linux from scratch which I have built several times and would highly recomend.

Lunar is an off-shoot of SourceMage. I believe that Sorcerer is one of the programs used by SourceMage to build the distro. There is another off-shoot of SourceMage -I can't remember the name right now...
If you want to stick closer to something like Slackware, try Jaguar Linux. It is based on DIY Linux(from one of the originators of LFS), but creates packages of the builds as you go along. Jaguar is created by an active forum member here -jong357

As a long time Slackware user I only try out new distros when a new version of Slack comes out.I wait a week before installing the new Slack (so the SBO packages are ready)This gives me time to mess with other distros to see what they're about.I have tried Lunar and Sourcemage. What I found was that they take ages and ages to compile and there wasnt any noticeable differences in speed.Try them out man as you may like them but for me I'll be sticking with Slackware.

What ? You have a funny idea of a source based distribution - out of your examples Gentoo and LFS are the only source based distros I know of.

On a source based distro you compile your base distribution from source - it doesn't refer to the origins of the distro.

Puppy is the farthest thing from being sourced-based that can be imagined. It is full of pre-compiled binaries which come from anywhere on the net they can be found. Even the developers(?) don't know where the sources are....

For some source based distros, there Gentoo, Sourcemage, which still alive & kicking, LunarLinux, Crux, I think Archlinux can be source based, & LinuxFromScratch, just to name a few that I can think of for now.

I believe sourcemage and lunar linux are spinoffs from sorcery and their similar and source based distros. I use and like sourcemage over the others including gentoo. I tried doing LinuxFromScratch but cannot get too far along before giving up or something not going right.
