Hello, I am new to gentoo and I thought it was getting slow so I did hdparm. I got:
timing cache 1369.52mb/sec
timing buffered 1.7mb/sec

hdparm says udma is on advancedpm=no LBA is on

Anyone know how to speed it up? I would have posted the results but I cannot figure out how to copy with xterm. Thanks for any help!

Can you provide the output of hdparm -i /dev/hda?

Try using gnome-terminal, Eterm, or similar rather than xterm. Or failing that, "hdparm -i /dev/hda > FILE" then open file in some editor.
