Session problems

Just installed PCLinux for a friend. A day later every time he tries to login as user he get a white console with user prompt. No desktop. But he can log in as root into desktop fine.

Can anyone tell what the problem is and how to solve.?

Log your friend in via the console, then do:
Code:

rm -r -f .kde
that will reset his desktop. Logout then login via the login manager as normal.

off hand did you run
(i don't run PClinux so may be different )
Code:

cd /home/(username)
 or
cd ~

first before running "rm -r -f .kde"

sure, i had a console with white background with my friends username i had a choice of going in as root or user. As user i ran the above code but it did't make any difference when reboot.

Fortunately this was a fresh install and therefore no data to loose. So I went for the radical option of reinstall the os.

Now the big battle is to solve a somewhat similar problem with my own Slackware. And this has data i need salvaged...

This wont log either as user or root. At KDE login after taking the username and password it tries to go in to KDE comes up with a dialog

The following installation problem was detected while trying to start kde

temp directory /temp is out of disk space kde is unable to start

when i click on ok I get

"could not start ksmserver. check your installation

I am thinking maybe i format the root partition saving the /home. Install pclinus then backup the /home and then reinstall slack with a larger / partition.

Feedback appreciated
