Arrow security level in mandriva 2005 limited edition

hi, I'm using a brand new version of mandriva 2005 limited edition
i love it
one problem, i need to lower the security level, or at least change the settings enough to allow users to traverse mounted file systems
i hate those damn access is denied errors, and i want rid of them. i have the root pass cause I'm the only user of my sys. no problems there, but i need to have the ability as a normal user to traverse mounted fs
thanks

if you cd to /mnt as a user what do you get?

Can you not just chmod it 755?

first thing i tried, wont work, i tried all dir permissions i can think of, they just get rewwritten when the fs is mounted, and reverted when its umounted
when i cd to /mnt, the output from ls -al is:

Code:
total 50
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 Jun 15 20:36 ./
drwxr-xr-x 23 root root 4096 Jun 15 20:27 ../
dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 2048 Jan 8 2002 cdrom/
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 May 30 19:17 cdrom2/
drwxr--r-- 5 root root 16384 Dec 31 1969 win_c_fat/
dr-x------ 1 root root 4096 Jun 13 18:10 win_d_ntfs/
drwxr--r-- 21 root root 8192 Jun 15 20:23 win_e_fat/
dr-x------ 1 root root 8192 Jun 14 22:08 win_f_ntfs/
fyi: you choose the security setting in setup of mandriva, when it boots from cd to install.
there has got to be a way to change it
also, contraary to popular belief, i *cannot* get into win_*_fat as a normal user

In your fstab make sure you mount options you have specified user:

Example:
Code:
/dev/hda1 /mnt/C: vfat noauto,user 0 0
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/gentoo auto noauto,user 0 0
/dev/hdb3 /mnt/slack auto noauto,user 0 0
In the above examples the use of the option user means they can be mounted by any normal user.

Yes. As a normal user. If you mount as root, you will be denied access.

To mount as root and allow users to access it, you might need to use the -o option. See the info/man page for mount for more information on this one.
