Searching for a free web cache server distro, or make one with squid.

Hello,

i would like to experiment a bit with a web caching server, and i'm wondering if there are special distro's for this that have a advanced webcache (squidbased?) onboard.

otherwise i might be forced to create one myselfs. (hopefully not tho). but then i need to know what distro would be good to use for this as a base. (i'm thinking small like DSL-distro or something?

i hope something prebuild like freeNAS of m0n0wall is out there for this, cos build-it-yourselfs might be far over the top for me.

thz in advance

squid is pretty easy to setup. If you are comfortable with compiling, you should grab the sources and make it. Either way, you'll have to study the squid configuration files anyways... that is if you want it to work the way you want.

As for distro, I'd recommend which ever one you are most comfortable with. It doesn't really matter, as long as squid will compile.

All the major distros have squid with it.

I like suse, use the squid thats built-in, then manage it with webmin. Check out webmin too :)

well i need this box to do some things that i'm not surtain i can configure myselfs. i'm not a *nix beginner but my knowhow is still pretty basic.

what the chach-server should do for me:
- chache windows-update once a week
- chache ftp.asus once a week (any maybe a few more in future)
- i need stat's about the chache size and age
- would be great if it could refresh the cache for sertain sites if older than x-days

what i been reading this would be a real pain-in-the-azz to config myself ?
