Well, I downloaded the source files and compiled and installed them. So far no problem. The I made the .xinitrc in my /home/scratchmaster/ and also the .fluxbox (also under /home/scratchmaster/

The .xinitrc contains the line exec /usr/local/bin/fluxbox (where the executable file is).

Well, it still won´t start.
When I restarted X, it comes to the RH loginscreen, I enter my name and password, and then it starts Gnome. It's just like linux doesn't read /home/scratchmaster/.xinitrc at all!

Dont use the login manager, just try to login in console and type startx, that should get you into fluxbox, also did u copy all the necessary files into your .fluxbox dir, as it is explained on their website?
I didn't like fluxbox... i tried XFce as someone here suggested and its the best! i like it much more than KDE or GNOME.... Give it a try too.....

How do I disable it? And if I don't like fluxbox, where do I get XFce?

XFCE IS PANTS! It's rubbish version of the already rubbish and ancient CDE. well that's my opinon. flox / blackbox is great, and actaully looks NICE ;-)

i don't know why flux doesn't appear on gdm, it's cos you've installed from source and not RPM, as i installed blackbox (you are aware they are effectively indentical?) from source, and xdm doesn't find it... if you install from RPM it will appear in the X login.

if you install the rpm's (e.g. from rpmfind.net) then you should be able to use switchdesk to choose which manager to use.

if you're interested, my blackbox looks like this

I got the rpm from fluxbox.sourceforge.net but it seemed like nothing got installed at all.
What do you suggest that I do?

Another way to set it would be if you ran Gnome, you've got a file ~/.Xclients and ~/.Xclients-default. Open up ~/.Xclients-default, go to the case section, and add one for flux/blackbox/whatever, should look like:

if [ -f $HOME/.wm_style ] ; then
WMSTYLE=`cat $HOME/.wm_style`
case "$WMSTYLE" in
BLACKBOX | blackbox)
helperStart
exec /usr/X11R6/bin/blackbox
;;
ICEWM | icewm)
helperStart
exec /usr/X11R6/bin/icewm
xterm &
;;
GNOME | gnome)
helperStart
exec gnome-session
;;
esac
fi

now "echo blackbox > ~/.wm_style" and you've set your default WM, to get smptin else just echo it into ~/.wm_style.

wouldn't that just set fluxbox as wm for gnome? I want to run it "natively" or how do you say it?

unSpawn 02-12-2002 11:58 AM

No it doesn't. These files set prefs for X, not Gnome.

ok, thank you, I'll try!
