Remastering Knoppix

Hello,
I tried to remaster Knoppix 3.6 following FAQ posted on Knoppix.net
one of a steps is
# Now we'll make the big KNOPPIX file which is a cloop compressed ISO 9660 filesystem : mkisofs -R -U -V "KNOPPIX.net filesystem" -publisher "KNOPPIX www.knoppix.net" -hide-rr-moved -cache-inodes -no-bak -pad /mnt/hda1/knx/source/KNOPPIX | nice -5 /usr/bin/create_compressed_fs - 65536 > /mnt/hda1/knx/master/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX

which is apparently not working
so i was advised to use
mkisofs -R /mnt/knx/KNOPPIX | create_compressed_fs - 65536 > /mnt/knx/NewCD/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX.
such command which is working but all it does it creates an empty file.

what am i doing wrong and what should i do to make it work

Cheers

Nikolay

For me, both options listed above do work!

Do you have enough memory? You need a lot of space for this step...

Hello,
yeah there must be enough

Using Toshiba Satellite 2410-603 laptop for Knoppix remastering, it has 30 GB hard drive and 256 MB DDR RAM.
Here is the hard drive partition table:

Volume Part type Status Size
C: FAT32X Pri, Boot 20,614.6
*:SWAPSPACE2 Linux Swap Pri 1,992.4
Linux Ext3 Pri 6,008.7

on linux partition I have about 1.5 GB free maybe its not enough?

Cheers

one more question:

How long did you have waited for the KNOPPIX file?

for about 5 minutes it was working I mean the drive was working then it would output some lines to shell. get back to the shell and everything stops working. I mean the drives not spinning anymore and even in 20 minutes this file is still empty. Dunno what's going on

this output to shell, it should long for about 15-30 minutes, it depends on how much software do you have in your KNOPPIX installed...

You have to wait for this output to end...

don't know what else to say...

Hi. I'm having the same problem as in this old thread. Clearly, I need more RAM, but I just don't have two gigs to handle this issue with.
I'm trying to perform this, more or less.
pluto.htu.tuwien.ac.at/mediawiki/index.php/Live_CD_Customization_Howto
I'm at "Putting the CD back together".
create_compressed_fs keeps bombing out.

This link here says you can split the result into smaller parts
groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.bugs.dist/browse_thread/thread/3ed81bcfa5c9d145/2c764d7ce9d3429a?lnk=st&q=%22create_compressed_fs+-h%22&rnum=2#2c764d7ce9d3429a
What do I need to do to split this huge file into smaller parts, and how do I reassemble the smaller parts once I'm done?
I assume I should use -S 100M or something, but I'm not sure.
