Redmond Linux (Amethyst)

Just installed RL Amy on my spare partition. I didn't really go much on it, and was just wondering if anyone else had tried it. If so, tell us all about your views.

PS NO DISTRO WARS! This is not a XXXX vs YYYY thread!

well, never tried it. not going to either.. looks to bloated and I don't need mine to be user-friendly, easy to use over-bloated OS. That's why I have one machine with Windows still on it.

i read somewhere that it upon first boot after install, it loads a hell of a lot of modules..

oh well, good for newbies i guess.

Yeah, i've been using linux for alittle while now and i actually like FreeBSD the best becuase its not bloated at all, and pretty easy to set up. The X-Server is finicky but not that bad. I might try OpenBSD soon.

I tried it out, just to see what it was like. I read an interview with the top blokey from RL, and it sounded OK - but I was to be disappointed. I would have liked to see a bit more of an effort made for the root user to customise it he/she sees fit. Unfortunately, they seem to have removed almost all of the config utils, except for the KDE Control Panel. It does, however, come with some nice media-type utils, such as XINE that actually works! and RealPlayer. Another thing on the down side is that they seem to have gone off on their own as to where things should be installed. It is a nightmare trying to install RPMs from RL into Mandy.

However, when all is said and done, it does do a good job on autoconfiguring almost everything (with only a little help needed for the X server), so it would make a good alternative distro for newbs, but I stress the alternative. Personally I would still advise newbs to go with Mandy.

Trickykid: what the hell are you talking about? Nothing can be more bloated than Mandrake, and all of the hundreds of things that get installed. Who needs five ways of installing a printer? It's just ridiculous I say!

As for the modules? I haven't looked at those yet, so I can't comment there.

Erm, stodge, tricky wasn't saying that it is more bloated than Mandy, just that it is bloated - which it is.

Oh, BTW, just been getting into Slack, so my reasoning might be a little tainted. Slack rocks, but I won't be getting rid of Mandy just yet.

Oh, and before this really gets going, just a reminder:

Well...

I have to say that it did get one of my co-workers interested in checking out linux. I know it's lame to be all taken in by screenshots but that's what did it for him. Regardless of the relative inanity of his criteria he did put his g3 aside for a couple of weeks to play with it.

Hey. Whatever weens people from the teat...

I actually have to confess, I have been using the XINE RPM from it because it works, unlike the multiple times that I've tried to manually install it!

I guess it's not all bad, I just got used to being able to configure stuff to my likings, and found it annoying that I couldn't do it.

I think it is potentially a good move, if it is closer to Windows then people are not going to be as frightned of using it.

I spent last night downloading/burning/installing Redmond Linux Amethyst Edition and well to tell you the truth i hated it. It trys to mimick windows nt type desktop and icons even. Newbies, stick with Mandrake it is better than this even though its alittle bit harder.

hehehehehehehehehehehehe

they even found their own XP-by-numbers cloud/field background... that's pitiful.

one thing that confused me was that they specifically didn't mention MSN messenger in the list of chat programs you could use.. weird.

They generally seem to give a VERY limited outlook on their distro, it's has THIS word processot, THAT browser..

ahh i spose it's porlly the easiest way for the windows massive to understand i guess... mention modular software and libraries and they'd run a mile no doubt.

and the delightful way they imply they wrote the whole thing... classy... like who would actually own up to writing kde???? :P
