Redhat 8, and no sound! :(
I have absolutely no sound after a fresh install of redhat 8.0! I had sound when I tried mandrake everytime, wtH! I also have it in windowsME...
In GNOME: Okay so I went in Sound Card Configuration, and it has two tabs, one labeled "VIA Technologies", with the following information: Vender: VIA Technologies Model: VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller Module: via82cxxx_audio Ther other tab is laveled "Creative Labs", with the following information: Vendor: Creative Labs Model: SB Live! EMU10k1 Module: emu10k1 When I click Play test sound on either tab I got no sound! Any help will be greatly appreciated Other things I've tried: Disabling on chip sound in BIOS Enabling onboard sound in BIOS Trying sndconfig Help :( |
you'd prolly want to use your sound blaster, disable the onboard from your jumpers or your bios. then install the correct sound modules in the kernel.
i THINK its insmod emu10k1 or something....at debian we have something called modconf where you can view a list of kernel modules and pick to install. |
It's already disabled and I believe that they're installed.

You might want to give the alsa drivers a try as well:
http://psyche.freshrpms.net/ If you decide to give it a go read the doc on it!: http://freshrpms.net/docs/alsa/ Anne |
The alsa isn't working. I'd hate to have to ditch redhat and go back to mandrake 9. I really like redhat 8 :( Actually I don't think I'll ever go back to mandrake 9 heh..

Hi,
As I recall i had sound problems in RH8..I had to install sndconfig and another file, awefx, I think..Then I had to go and turn on the sound so that it would start on boot ..This was for an awe32 card so yours will be different.. Keep trying, you'll get it..Everything on my system seems to work perfectly in RH8..What a pleasant surprise.. Good Luck, JP;) |
Thanx for the reply. I have installed Alsa in the meantime and luckily it works!
I've even found a dvd player (ogle) which can play my dvd's smoothly (with alsa) on my very slow system (PII 400) again. -Strange thing, with RH7.3 mplayer (which now crawls) worked best, and now ogle (not so good under 7.3) works best.- Anne |
Good afternoon
I had the same problem with RedHat and Mandrake. I think you could look up the answer under my user name. The only problem was that the sound was muted by default. I just used a program, I think it was Volume Control, moved the sound sliders a little and I had sound. Very strange, but you might want to try it. Hope it works. jimmmac |
I tried that at first, but the gnome volume controls kept crashing on me, after which I had to rerun sndconfig every time until that didn't work anymore, so I gave it up.
Fortunately Alsa did the trick for me. Anne |
hey!!
don't worry, there's an easy way to fix it :D just pop-in the redhat cd and then open the package installation thing and from the "sound and audio" category, install soundconfig (sndconfig). Once you have that installed, just open up console and type sndconfig and just follow the on-screen info, you'll have the sound working within a minute :) |
