Thanks

Well it is GeForce4 card and there are drivers on http://www.nvidia.com that work for all NVIDIA cards from TNT to GeForce4 4600 Ti

the geforce 4 cards are supported by red hat 8.

red hat is nice, but they took a lot of multi-media support out of the operating system . i ended up putting red hat 7.3 back on my computer because of it. they have no mp3 music support, you have to download a plug-in for xmms player. no macro-media player or shockwave support. this is used on many web sites.

i wish red hat would offer a retail version with all this added support, like suse 8, and i would pay the added price for it.

Wouldn`t be much easier just to download missing stuff instead of reinstalling whole OS????

i know what you mean, but the shockwave support is in a tar gz file which i still have trouble installing. i only did it once with opera and now have forgotten how to do it. later ronss

tar zvxf name_of_file.tar.gz

I would suggest reading man page for every command you have problems using.

axe z

thanks for the help. i am aware of the man pages, but the creation of a directory where most of my problem lies, and have a path to the directory is were i run into problems. if i can successfully install tar gz files and compile the linux the kernal, most of my problems with linux would be solved.
