I started to order Redhat Linux 7 from a retail firm that specializes in Linux software. The customer service rep. there recommended that I not buy this. He said that Redhat is having problems with version 7. Has anyone out there had any problems with Redhat 7, or heard anything about this?

The main "problem" that people are having is that Red Hat shipped a broken non-standard version of gcc. There are a few other smaller problems, but Red Hat has had notoriously bad .0 releases. You may want to install 6.2 (which is quite stable) and then wait for 7.1 or even 7.2.

Thank you for your reply. How long does it normally take Redhat to come out with a later distribution, i.e. when do you expect 7.1 to come out?

Also, what do you know about Corel Linux Second Edition? I've been playing around with the download version of it for a couple of days. Is Redhat really all that much better than Corel, and if so, why?

The only thing that I am wondering if it is not working on Corel Linux is that when I log out or shut down, the KDE gives me a dialog box saying it is ready to log out. When I press OK, the screen just freezes. It doesn't take me to a console. Is this normal?

Red Hat 7.1 will probably be 3-6 months away. I highly recommend staying away from corel linux. You can do a search for some of my previous posts on the subject if you would like ;)

downgrade back to 6.2
 

After Upgrading to RH7.0 my USB-printer doesn t work anymore. That is why I would like to down(uP??)grade back to 6.2. Is there an easy way to do so?

To reply to the broken gcc issue....

I am not a RedHat advocate. I think there policy of releasing things lie GCC when they are broken to accelerate development leaves a lot to be desired. I do think it is noteworthy to mention that they do include kgcc which is apparently a working version of gcc. I have heard if you delete gcc and link kgcc to gcc then you will be fine as far as compilations go. I haven't tested this out so don't take my word as definite here, try it out first.

Unfortunately there is no easy way of reverting to an earlier release. It would probably be easier to backup your data and reinstall.
