Redhat 7.3 Problems Installation/Booting

I have some serious problems with Redhat 7.3. I have been trying a week to let it work, but it just wont.

I want to make a dualboot on this computer, windows xp and linux. I have tried making partitions in every way you can think, with disk druid, fdisk and partition magic. I have tried everything but it wont work :(

When Redhat is finished installing and I boot the computer (without bootdisk), it says L_ and then stops and wont responed anymore.

When I boot the computer with bootdisk, the computer crashes when doing the [ OK ] / [ FAILED ] thing. It just wont respond anymore.

Does anyone know what the problem could be ? Thanks in advance,

Bart

PS:

My computer is an Intel Pentium 4 with 512 MB DDR-RAM.
My hard disk is 80 Gb.

How have you set up the partitions on the drive? And where did you install LILO to with what options?

installation issues

I have set up the partitions in any way you can think of. First i already had windows xp installed, so i made up a free partition on the end of the drive and tried to install redhat there, it wouldnt work. Then i let the installation create the partitions itself, it wouldnt work also. After a few more tries, i decided to format my whole hard disc and delete the partitions. Then i installed redhat on the completely empty drive, letting the installation choose the partitions itself, but even that wouldnt work.

I installed LILO in the MBR using the installation. I also tried installing LILO in the first sector of the hard disc, and i tried installing GRUB.

Nothing works :(

When you say it wouldn't work do you mean you get EXACTLY the same problem each time. That the installation works - but you get the L every time you try to boot into it yeah?

Also, do you have the drive set up on the primary IDE as master? Just a thought.

This was from www.tldp.org under the bootdisk How-to:

Quote:

The first stage boot loader has been loaded and started, but it can't load the second stage boot loader. The two-digit error codes indicate the type of problem. (See also section ``Disk error codes''.) This condition usually indicates a media failure or a geometry mismatch (e.g. bad disk parameters).
When you used the bootdisk on which part did it crash?

Yep i get the same problem each time...
Does it matter if the hard drive is master or slave? It is now on primary slave, and my ZIP-drive on master.

When i use the bootdisk, it crashes when doing the [OK] / [FAILED] stuff. It then suddenly stops, the screen stays the same but the computer doesnt respond to anything anymore :(

Why dont you put the zip drive as the master on the 2ndary IDE chain and move the HD to the master on the primary IDE chain. Try it that way, ive had problems with lilo hanging but a simple reinstall would do it. Then again when i put somthing on the 2nd chain in my server, it wony read it for more then 3 secounds at a time which give it a read error.

Just an idea.

I too have had problems with no master HD, but I'm not sure if that is the problem completely. It may well be a case of wrong LILO configuration, but with the hanging on the OK / FAILED section could suggest that there are other problems.

On what does it fail in the OK / FAILED part? What is the last thing to be displayed, what fails?
