Red Hat 8 sound issues audigy2

ok, I've been playing with this red hat distro since sept, and I can't get the damn os to recognize my soundcard. I started out with some onboard soundchip, then upgraded to an audigy 2. the thing is,
modinfo soundcore gives

filename: /lib/modules/2.4.18-24.8.0/kernel/drivers/sound/soundcore.o
description: "Core sound module"
author: "Alan Cox"
license: "GPL"

sys
and when I run the rh ->system settings -> soundcard detection

brings up a box saying
:::sound card configuration::::
vendor: Creative Labs
Model; SB Audigy
Module; audigy

:::::Play test sound::::

::::OK::::

but the play test sound gives no output
I've made sure Plug and play is disabled in my bios,
The mixer volume is set, i.e. it's not at 0

There are no errors on boot or shutdown.
I'm stumped. Someone mentioned a possible irq conflict, but how to control that in linux I've not got an Idea.

Any suggestions?

btw, VIA k7vta3 chipset,
amd xp 1700
256mg ram (I almost typed K)

thanks

hoi Jazzmans

having the same problem. Only i'm using a audigy2 with a breakbox (platinum) and I found out that I do get sound from my headphone connector.

now I'm still searching for an update for the drivers. I assume that linux sees my soundcard as an "old" audigy and can't handle the new one

greetings

It's indeed not the linux distribution that seems to matter; I'm using the same audigy2 platinum with breakout-box and SuSE linux 8.2. Doesn't seem to matter which driver or soundsystem I use (ALSA, OSS, etc): I am just getting sound on my headphones! And also the mixer doesn't seem to work a 100%

I used the Audigy 2 stuff off this site and my audigy 2 is working find with Red hat 8.0.
