hi tinkster & jaycnrs
just before i venture to run xf86config i thought i would run the following from my "running linux" book
X -showconfig
&
X -probeonly
these commands should have given me the configured grapics adapters and the chipsets used by the video card
i am somewhat disturbed that bot these commands did not detect any configured drivers nor the particular chipset used by the video card
X -showonly gives
XFree86 Version 4.2.0 (Red Hat Linux release: 4.2.0-72) / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 23 January 2002
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See
http://www.XFree86.Org/)
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.18-11smp i686 [ELF]
Build Host: daffy.perf.redhat.com
Module Loader present

this should have a configured drivers part at the end
X -probeonly gives
