Question about versioning (SuSE 9)

Does 'SuSE 9' imply that 8.2 will be redundant? Or will it just be different. I know that some people use redhat 7.2, and 8 and dont have any interest in 9.

What I'm asking is, does the 9 indicate an improved 8.2, or something different that may not even appeal to 8.2 users?

I was about to buy 8.2 when I heard of SuSE 9. 8.2 sounds more stable. As in, version 8, but patched up twice. Version 9 sound . . . new and risky.

Anyway, I think I've posed my question as hap-hazardly as possibly. Try not to let it put you off replying

Regards,
unholy

According to Linux Format magazine (November 2003) - Suse 9.0 has:
- a slew of invisible fixes to improve look and feel and boot up times (up to twice as fast)
- hopefully a current snapshot build of a pre-release 2.6 kernel
- OpenOffice.org 1.1
- Scribus 1.0
- tweaks to networking setup, incl. home networking
- now detects and configures up to 50% of winmodems
- SuSE System Doctor in YAST for repairs and rollbacks
- even easier installation

As I'm currently trying out SuSE 8.2 and for the most part quite like it, I may shell out and buy 9.0 as it is (I think) around £35 (or £25 if you use the promo from Linux Magazine).

Hey Guys

From what I've read SuSE linux 9.0 sounds pretty damn good...

But it seems that it is not a major upgrade, as version 9.0 suggests, but merely a minor upgrade.

It's a shame really, as after two years of downloading and playing round with the following distro's (RedHat 7.3, 8.0, 9.0 & Mandrake 9.1),
I finnaly bought SuSE linux 8.2 Pro just two weeks ago.

But I will just have to wait for whichever version include a stable release of the Linux kernal 2.6. As I just don't think 9.0 is worth paying out for right now.

Thanks Guys

That is the right attitude, AFAIAC.
You pick a wave and you ride it. You get what you get and next time you may pick another wave.
I have not considered it necessary to aquire every minor upgrade.
