Question about Gentoo's speed

I'm debating whether or not I should do a stage 1 install or a stage 3 install. I understand that stage 1 is more optimized for the processor and all the packages will be compiled (as opposed to stage 3's precompiled packages), but I'm wondering is there a whole lot of difference between the speed?? I don't use a lot of processor intense applications (atleast nothing that I've had to wait a long time for), so is it really worth the time to do the stage 1 installation, which takes so long to complete? If it's just a marginal improvement, then perhaps I won't even bother.

Opinions?

there's not a huge difference at all, but i'd say just do a stage 1 for the sake of it.. why not?
