Picking a distro with LAMP

Which distro would you recommend for a newbie (with LAMP) who wants to use the server for home use purposes like file sharing between a windows laptop and a linux box?

Just about any distro on the planet will do that. Pick one of the commonly used server distros and go with it (I personally like CentOS or Debian in this role, but they are by no means the only choices).

Newbie with LAMP perhaps, but what is your OS background?
If you have no Unix/Linux then a hand holding distro is
probably what you are looking for.

I'm not even going to mention any names because there are so many, many messages about that!! (Ok like Ubuntu - seeing as you asked...)

LAMP works fine under everything!
(Although I do have a few complaints about my last MySql install on a remote Server using Fedora.)

Obviously I still like it, 'cause I'm still here (after how many years?)

Saying that: that LAMP works under everything! You should look into finding issues about Video support etc. find out what is supported by your current system...

Have fun!

Cheers,
alar

BTW: I have just posted a very basic web dev template for HTML/CSS in a PHP environment. Once you get your system up, you may find this of interest..
