PCLinuxOS problem

When I try to install PCLinuxOS, it freezes. I know it is bloated, and its not for my computer, but I need it for work. I have 256mb of RAM, is that too low? Also, is there a way to install the OS without actually booting the LiveCD?

There isn't a way to install PCLinuxOS without using the live cd. Some other distros have minimal installers which allow you to do a network install but not PCLinuxOS. 256 megs is probably on the low side for running a live cd like PCLinuxOS and installing from it. Maybe you could try the "MiniMe" version of PCLinuxOS 0.9.3.

Problem is, I was directed to PCLinuxOS 2007 because it automatically has Java 2 Runtime environment.

Its not really difficult to install and setup java on any distro. I can help you out if you have any problems doing this on your own.

phantom_cyph 03-16-2007 02:50 PM

Ya, I had problems. I installed Ubuntu 6.1 on my boss's computer. Then I needed to get the program designed for his dial-up service. (The programs on Ubuntu wouldn't work). So I got the program and found out I needed J2Runtime Environment to actually run it. So I got all the dependencies and everything I thought I needed and it never installed correctly. (it never installed).

So, can I be 'guaranteed' that if I go to work with the 2 PCLinuxOS discs I have and his computer has 1 GiB of RAM, that I will able to install it?

phantom_cyph 03-16-2007 07:49 PM

Hello? I need some sort of conformation by Saturday morning. (My time is 8:50pm, Friday).

Nothing is guaranteed. ;) Even when installing Windows nothing is guaranteed, you can still face problems and major show stoppers depending on your hardware configuration and the OS you are trying to install.

Like I said in one of your other threads, patience is a virtue.

phantom_cyph 03-16-2007 08:13 PM

Lol, unfortunately, patience is not a virtue recognized by the time limit my boss gave me. I have had a problem with Freespire booting as well, could a computer with more RAM boot better? Also, I noticed that the file I need to install is a deb file, what would I need to install a deb file on a rpm-run file system?

reddazz 03-16-2007 08:18 PM

Normally you cannot install debs on rpm based distros. If you already had a running Debian based system, you could install alien and use that to convert the deb to an rpm. The problem is that the resulting deb is not guaranteed to work. Have you tried Mepis?

phantom_cyph 03-16-2007 08:19 PM

No, does that come with Java 2 Runtime however?

I don't know, I have not used it for years. Very few Linux distros include java by default because it used to be proprietary but things may change soon because its now opensource. You can install java on your own using the packages from the sun website. Its not really complicated and if you need help, look though past threads or start a new one.

phantom_cyph 03-16-2007 08:53 PM

That requires the internet, I need Java to run a particular program to get me on the net...

ORBiTrus 03-16-2007 11:27 PM

Well, how do you get your Linux? Right - you download them first. So, download it and put in on a flash memory card.

It kinda helps if you can get permission to take your bosses computer to your place and do it there. Especially when you run into these Catch-22 that only have a time-consuming work-around. Mostly for the forums...

And remember - everything software can be fixed. Have a program that requires libc5? Get the libc5 sources and compile it into a different prefix. Symlink anything you need, and the program should run.

Kalabanta - I've been using PCLinuxOS since 0.92 early last year, currently on 0.93a - and the new PCLOS-2007 is just about thru its third Test Release. I'm running full Big-Daddy, not Minime - on a 1.9GHz AMD with 512DDR400. It's faster booting and running the Suse or Mandriva, and rather more user-friendly than Ubuntu - particularly with Synaptic and the excellent repository.

At 684MB on the D/L'd ISO - just under 2GB installed - it's hardly "bloated". I guess, if you put in several thousand apps, tools, games, utilities, so on, from the Repos - yes, it'd be a bit bloated... Otherwise, it certainly isn't!

The JRE is okay - new in '2007, too - and there's plenty under "Search" on the Forum about things using it...

You don't need 1GB of RAM - 256MB is the minimum - it's rather faster with 512MB.

If you have a bit longer look at the Forum, we might be able to see you thru most of the probs you're having.

Hope to see you there,

Best Regards, Dave.
