Operating system similiar to Ubuntu 11.4 classic
Hello,
I have been using Ubuntu for about two years. And because of the change from the Classic interface to Unity. I am looking for a similar Linux operating system similar to 11.4's classic option. I do not enjoy distro jumping and I am not a Linux super user. I am considering returning to proprietary software, if I can not find a similar system to Ubuntu 11.4's classic option. Thank for any help and or suggestions finding new operating system. |
The easiest choice would be Linux Mint; they are committed to providing a familiar environment for their users.

Thanks Snowpine,
I have been considering Mint, however, I am not convinced of their stability as an organization. Gerard |
If your top concern is stability-of-organization, then I highly recommend Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This is a paid-subscription distro from a large, profitable company. Their current release uses the "classic" Gnome 2 desktop environment, and they will support it through 2020.
CentOS and Scientific Linux are free "clones" of Red Hat with the same Gnome 2 desktop. I use both of these on a daily basis. :) |
You could use Debian 6 Squeeze which has the familiar Gnome 2 desktop environment. Ubuntu is built from a Debian base so 95% of what is there should be familiar to you and the rest that isn't can be worked through with the extremely knowledgeable Debian community here at LQ.

Thanks Snowpine,
I will look into Red Hat Enterprise, 2020 is a long time. This may work. |
