Novell to Acquire Suse

In case you haven't heard Novell just announced that they will be acquiring Suse for about $210 million in cash.

interesting, stil GPL i hope?

Whitehat 11-04-2003 09:09 AM

Novell used to have a great Server OS. I hope they really run wild with this Linux thing and make a come back. They used to have more servers running their OS than Microsoft did.

Novell rox ;)

Is LQ talking with Novell about getting reps for a SuSE forum here (assuming they keep the SuSE name)?

It should be interesting to see how KDE fares. Hopefully the KDE developers won't get screwed. Suse was KDE's biggest benefactor. Novell purchased Ximian back in August. Will a merging of the desktops occur or will we simply see tighter integration of the Apps in each camp? Should be interesting. Can't wait to go to the LinuxExpo in NYC in January.

Hmmm, Funny (Not really) At the opening of the stocks today, Someone sold 1000000 shares of Redhat - in turn RH stock went down $1.38, Novell went up $2.40, sucks wish I would have seen this coming! I would have sold too, then bought Novell, made my money, sold and bought back into RH with the lower price! Oh well... I wait it out...

$210 mill only? What a bargain

mcleodnine 11-04-2003 11:11 AM

Not sure if they'll keep the SuSE name, but I would imagine a compromise can be reached. "NoVELL" perhaps ;)

david_ross 11-04-2003 02:01 PM

All I can say is that I doubt if I'll be using SuSE again. Pity - it was a good distro.

Pcghost 11-04-2003 02:31 PM

What's wrong with Novell owning SUSE? I figured it would be great for Linux adoption, and possibly get us a Novell client for Linux. Not to mension the work Novell has done to help stomp the luser SCO Group into oblivion. Isn't this a good day for Linux?

david_ross 11-04-2003 02:35 PM

I just have a mutual hatred for Novell software - It hates me so I hate it back.

grahamj 11-04-2003 02:39 PM

oh no!

is that novell admitting their software is cr** ?

so now they decide to buy SUSE so they can make that crap too

oh dear is this the end of linux as we know it

got a view on this?

I figured I'd actually buy it now, since its an American Company now.. ;)

Nah, never really been into Suse, last time I installed was 6.4 and haven't tried it since. I think it was on my machine for a good hour or so. Beats the record of Corel being on my machine once for less than an hour before it got wiped. :D

r00tnuke 11-04-2003 06:06 PM

I own RedHat, so what if it dropped. Whenever it dips it only encourages me to buy more. The road will be rocky for all Linux stocks. But if you stick with it and keep your eye on the target you will be rewarded greatly many times over.

If IBM bought Redhat what would happen then? Even better, if there were rumors of Redhat being purchased by IBM......, you do the math.

Here is the way it works, a company has exponential growth, companies consolidate with each other, big fish - little fish, mergers happen, it's all a part of it.

This is the beginning of one of the greatest OS/economic times we will ever see in our lifetime. It will dwarf Microsoft. Hear me now, believe me later.

:)

Yea, I guess. It just hurts when you loose $4000 in a day on RH stocks! What do you guys think of buyinig Novell stocks? They ended the day lower than they started! Up $2.40 and then down... just wondering on the long haul if they would be worth it....? Or baybe buy more RH! ;)
