Ive tried to keep a journal of my journey into Linux. This is my discovery.

Linux Journal

Phase I

I chose my first install on an older machine that was sitting in my basement, which was running Windows 95. I had installed Windows 2000 on it and it was running fine but slow. Iíve decided that Iím probably going to install some small version of Linux and use it as a server once I figure out what Iím doing.

Pentium MMX 200mh
48 mb Ram
6 gig hd
15gig hd
Toshiba DVD
HP CD Writer
Linksys Ethernet NIC with Cable DSL
56k Modem (no dialup)
ess1866 soundcard
Matrix Millenia Video
PS2 Mouse

Knoppix Debian
I started with Knoppix Debian. This installed nicely and I used a KDE desktop. It didnít detect my CD or My DVD or Sound Card and I couldnít figure it out so I scrapped the Knoppix for now. Network worked wonderfully.

Ubuntu
I proceeded to install Ubuntu. Everything setup wonderfully except for the same hardware decoction problems in Knoppix. The install was slow but very clean. Network worked wonderfully. Navigating through the desktop was extremely slow, so slow in fact that I scraped it on this machine. No Partitioning of hard drive was necessary. The 2nd hd wasnít seen in file manager though.

Damn Small Linux
I read some postings about older machines and tried DSL. The install wasnít as clean as Ubuntu or Knoppix. The Install was much faster.

Slackware

This is currently the version I have installed. Iíve run into some install problems (Partitioning) and found help. I didnít have a Kernel Installed onto my boot disk, which caused a boot error (Grub Error 17). I can get to the Internet through Cholesterol Free Windows and it seems to be fineÖnot too slow to run on my machine (although there was a command I needed to do to activate my Ethernet card (dhcpcd) that I didnít know about but found on these postings). Web browser must include Java because Java Scripts work file. Still cant get my DVD rom to be recognized or my sound card to work. CD/RW works but no sound through my soundcard. If I plug my speaker into the cdrom it works. I will continue to play around with this and update my journal.

Phase II

I chose my next machine to install on a somewhat newer machine and chose Ububtu for this one

Celeron 667mh
192 mb Ram
40 gig hd
Emachime CD
HP CD Writer
Linksys Ethernet NIC with Cable DSL
Linksys WMP11 wireless adapter
56k Modem (no dialup)
Not sure about sound card
LG External DVD Writer
PS2 Wheel Mouse

The installation was pretty quick. Sound card works great, Internet works great. CD Writer doesnít show up anywhere and Iím not sure how to mount it. Canít get Linksys Wireless card to work but the NIC works fine. I read about ndiswrapper but compiling programs was mentioned and Iím not sure how to install. When I pull up a page, which requires Java, Firefox (web browser) asks for permission to install java and also Flash Media player. Both seem to install but when I pull the page up again, it asks to install again and Java doesnít work. I really like the feel the desktop. Itís very much like windows.

The journal is a great idea. I appreciate you keeping up abreast of how you are doing on this. As a newbie, I get a lot out of reading what others are doing.

I've been able to get Mandrake 10, then Mepis, and now Vector Linux running on my test machine. So far, I like Mepis best, but that is probably the newbie in me.

Mepis has been recommended by a couple of folks. I may try that one next.

So far, I like Linux allot. When I get bold, I'll install it with Windows xp in dual boot mode on a newer machine.

Good Luck...Keep me posted of your endeavors.

My test machine is a 733 MHz Compaq Ipaq workstation. Has a video connector and everything else is USB. Everything is supported by just about everything. It works very smooth to get it set up. I have a duplicate of this one that is running W2k Advanced Server, eventually, this will become a Linux box acting as my DHCP and file server.
