Unhappy no mouse function? (still quite newbie)

hi folks,

i got two pcs. i use the older one (pentium 200) for experimenting.
my problem is, that i cant get my serial mouse (tried 4 different mices) running in all the distributions except suse.

i tried the following distributions:
knoppix (on my other pc the same mouse works)
mandrake 8+9
red hat

all show the same symptom: the first minutes while upsetting the mouse works, after the automatic hardware detection it no longer works.

today i looked into the XF86Config where i found:

Section "pointer"
Protocol "Microsoft"
Device "/dev/mouse"
Emulate3Buttons
Emulate3Timeout 70
EndSection

also i saw a message that a mouse was found while booting.

so whats the problem?
why does the mice (all 4 of them, all serial) work with suse 7.2?

thanks in advance,
thomas

If it works with one distro, it should work with all when configured properly. Which port is your mouse connected to? If it's COM1 in Linux it's /dev/ttyS0, COM2 is /dev/ttyS1 and so on. /dev/mouse is a symlink. It should point to the right /dev/ttyS? file. If it's incorrect, change it and see if it works.

If you don't know how to modify the symlink, please write.

I am having an occasional mouse problem with a new install. From time to time the pointer appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen. If I move the mouse around it will jump a bit and then returns to its corner. I've tried 2 different mice, same problem. This is a new emachines box with a fresh Redhat 8 install. Unplugging the mouse momentarily always solves the problem.

michael1, your problem looks similar to divingduck's. Find out which port your mouse uses. Then edit /etc/X11/Xf86Config-4 and modify the Device "/dev/mouse" line to be Device "/dev/ttyS0" or similar, depending on the port you use.

Mouse problem in Red Hat 9

I tried to install RedHat 9 on Compaq II 450 Mhz, Mouse was not detected on PS/2 port. Itired to configure but did not work at all.

Than I used serial mouse, it worked 1st time but next time when Xwindow strated it failed to detect and any configuration change won't recognise.

It is frustrating where as it workes well with RedHat 7.0

What is the problem

Another serial mouse problem

Hello,

I am using a serial mouse on Slackware 9.0, and it just won't work in X.
However, it works just fine in text mode...

When I move the mouse, the cursor moves to the upper right corner of the screen, and the buttons don't respond.

I have tried to kill gpm and the to restart the X server, but this didn't solve the problem.
Also, trying all the serial mouse drivers didn't help...

My mouse is using COM1, and it works just fine in Mandrake&RedHat...

Please help me.

Thankz anyway. Keep up the good work!

Dragosh

Hello,

Thanks for your kindness...But i've figured it out.
I had forgotten to edit XF86Config

That would be interesting
But I'd like to tell you not to post your new questions to existing threads, even if you have a very similar one. When you have a question, create your own thread.
