News on SUSE 9.0

On The Register there is news of SUSE's next release. Read it here.

Looks rather marvellous and will leave the other distros playing catch up - unless we're about to see a spate of new releases in the next few weeks.

Two things: for one, SUSE LINUX 9.0 now also supports the NTFS file system used by Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP. Thus, users of all Windows versions without any previous Linux experience can install SUSE LINUX alongside Windows and migrate gradually.
Does this mean that we will be able to write to NTFS drives?

probably not, what i think they mean is that you can resize ntfs partitions from within the installer, instead of having to use a third party app (partition magic) first, then installing suse. but i could be wrong.

sounds like suse 9 will be able to patition the nfts file system along with the suse 9 file systme during the install, that,s great. i have windows xp on my rig, and i should be able to just insert the suse9 disc, and it will partiton the nfts and creat one for suse 9, sounds great.

it also has support fot the amd64 processor, good news too.

better support for winmodems in laptops too.

Being able to resize a ntfs partition is no big deal. The 8.2 installer does that, already.
Being able to write to a ntfs partition is a big deal. Did they accomplish that?

Just got a reply from SuSE. A complete package listing for SuSE 9.0 will be available on their site next week.

Well, I'd be surprised if you werent able to read from an ntfs partition. But as for writing to ntfs, I doubt it. Especially going by the second post above yours.

The 8.2 pro version detects and mounts ntfs partitions by default (my case).
But it's read-only.

ntfs is quite confusing and difficult to reverse engineer. Unless MS has an agreement with Suse for opening it up. I wouldn't expect that....

One work around is to parition your windows drive, and convert any drives you want accessible from linux, to fat32 instead of ntfs. it's faster than ntfs anyway, (even if not as secure, but i've had no problems).
