new than 2.4 kernels

I would like to know what the newest kernel is in Linux. I have a new box with a SiS 740 chip. It appears that the 2.4 kennel causes problems with pci loading. I have Xandros loaded right now and it will not load my nic card. I've read that 2.5 kernel will work just fine but it is unstable at this time. I hate to spend money on something that isn't going to work.
