New Package System for R.H.

Hi all!

Komplete Linux Newbie here..

I have been bouncing between Mandrake 9.0 and Suse and RH. 8.0 for a few months now can't make up my mind which one I like the best.. Eventually I guess I will pick one.. they all have their little things. that I don't like but I guess it's just a "Getting used to something new" Phase I am still going through..

Anyway on to my Question :

I downloaded and installed R.H 8.0 and so far am NOT IMPRESSED

I can't get Xine or mplayer to work.. Compiling fails.. and RPM's have many unsats.

I HATE the RPM manager that comes with the new RH is there anyway I can switch to another Package manager.. IE: like the one in SUSE or Mandrake without leaving RH.. I want to give RH a Fair shake before making my final decision..

Thanks for the shouts.. :)

Have you tried Red Carpet or apt for rpm?

# Redhat links
Red Hat Linux Manuals
Maximum RPM
rpmfind
Easier software management: APT-RPM - Red Carpet

# Redhat 8.0 configuration commands
Configure soundcard:
redhat-config-soundcard
Configure X server:
redhat-config-xfree86

Problem I had with RedHat 8.0's xmms

I'm basicly a KDE-non-liker, so I did not install it. After a while of fiddling with RedHat's 'Psyche' (8.0) mailing-list, I found out that if you don't install KDE, xmms core-dumps because it can't find the default sound library (that is installed only with KDE). So, one issue I could fix was this. Installing KDE then removing it makes xmms work.
