I come from Slackware when it used to be a Single cd distro (Remember that?)
Unfortunately having tried the latest 12.2 (actually v13's hit now!) I realise I don't have the time or patience to sit in console configging away to my hearts content anymore.
As such I'm in need of a nice distro that's (relatively)easily to setup with my laptop hardware such as wireless, widescreen LCD resolution, graphics card etc out of the box. Mainly for internet and perhaps some unreal tournament 2004 (so the graphics card support is a must)
I'm contemplating Fedora core, how is it?
We have Ubuntu at work on some of the Netbooks, unfortunately I'm not fond of it.
Any advice?
My machine; (Laptop, 2.0ghz single core centrino, 2gb ram, ati radeon mobility)
Well I checked it out but wow, 5 Dvd's. That's quite something, I'm on a pretty slow dsl connection so can't imagine downloading that amount at this stage.
Ironically I have deb version 3 on disc from when I attempted to try it from a while back but the disc isn't booting pobably due to it being quite scratched.
Hmm I'd say a Debian net install or Arch Linux could suit you quite nicely. Then once wicd or network manager is installed you should be good to go.
As for Fedora Core, I found it to be a little to unstable for my taste to go with it for a long period of time. (It's nice overall but just more than I wanted to deal with on my laptop.)
And finally if you don't want Debian or Arch, you could give Linux Mint a whirl. I've heard good things about it even though it is based on Ubuntu. (I'm not really an Ubuntu fan either.)
Well,..
for a one CD distro that pretty much has everything OOTB,...why not just go with Linux Mint 7? I know it's based on Ubuntu,..but has pretty much everything already set up. It's a "time-saver". If you like something "light-weight" with a lot of stuff (OOTB) I usually use Vector Linux "standard". (Vector Linux is as close as I want to get to Slackware)....
and I second what Zeig30CT said:
