New Debian User

Hi,

I've just ordered Debian Potato on CD which should arrive in the next few days. I currently use RedHat 7.1 and Mandrake 8.0 and was wondering what are the best actions to take to be prepared for a Debian install? I think have every last detail of my hardware from my Mandrake installation so I believe that will help.

Also, if the potato install goes to plan I will be wanting to upgrade to testing(Woody) soon after. Any ideas how many MB the distro-upgrade is and how long it might take to download with a 56k modem?

Cheers Zombie

A dist-upgrade from Potato to Woody will upgrade all (or nearly all) the packages you have on your computer... so how long it takes really depends on what you have installed!

The minimum would be around 20MB but if you install everything it could reach a gigabyte or more (but who needs a dozen email clients?).

As I mentioned before, I am using a 56k modem. Would the downloads resume if for any reason my modem dropped during the dist-upgrade assuming I set up my modem to redial automatcally?

Yes, the debian ftp installer supports resume.
