Need advice on which distribution

Hey all!

I am currently using SuSe 9.3 and I have the following problems:

Runs slow as hell compared to Windows XP
Doesn't play Divx, Xvid, or any other video format I can get my hands on.
Doesn't play DVDs.
Music player will freeze up frequently.
About once every ten minutes the computer will freeze for no reason and resume about 30seconds to a minute later.

The resolution is crap, it's the same resolution as I had in windows except it is MUCH less clear, hurts my eyes and gives me a headache.

I can't get VNC to run properly, every time I run it I get these strange greenish blue bars at the top of my windows that will iconicize the window or move it.

I need a distribution that won't have these frustrations and has an easy to use package manager like Suse does.

Can anyone suggest a distrobution to me please?

Thanks in advance,

David

XavierP or trickykid would rant if they hear that phrase again

"Which distro?" ...

Tip: Keep the mods on your side, and don't post a message like that.
Use google for all your researching needs, and do RTM.

I use gentoo, if it's any help to you.

acid_kewpie 11-05-2005 03:43 PM

how about suse 9.3? just take the time to learn how to make it do what you say it can't, rather than assuming it's the software's fault. ;) install the right software and you'll get the results you're after.

hang on... XavierP is classed as more annoying than me now? i must be slipping!! :D

haha, no... I didn't realize you where a moderator until you posted this and I looked at the little quick username checkup on the side of the messages.
I just though you were a frequant poster. :)

I never got one of my post locked, so I don't think any moderator is annoying so far... :D

XavierP 11-05-2005 04:12 PM

Hey, guess what, post locks can happen to anyone at any time for the smallest reasons. You are now on my list..... :)

I'm not annoying, especially not more annoying than Acid_Kewpie, I just don't like to see people waste their time - threads like this get 2 answers:
1. There have been many other threads just like this - just search for them
2. You should always use <a list of "newbie" distros> or <a list of harder distros>. Repeat ad infinitum.

As was said here, learn how to use the OS and you won't have these problems. Media palying is discussed at length on LQ, at the SuSE site and all over the internet. And the rest of the problems can be solved with a little research and a few well placed questions here.

As said before, I don't think any moderator is annoying. I never had a bad experience with a moderator before.

Kubuntu

Ubuntu

I wouldn't use the offical Mandiva site, instead I would use this

http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29
or
www.planetmirror.com

Knoppix

http://iso.linuxquestions.org/distro.php?distro=5

PCLinuxOS

http://www.pclinuxonline.com/pclos/html/download.html

BeatrIX

Com'on acid, we all know your still hated as much as I am.. XavierP will never amount to our class of standards, he'll always be second behind... ;)

XavierP 11-13-2005 11:19 AM

Unless I ban Trickykid, in which case the crown is mine! :)

I dare ya.. double dog dare ya.... ;)

mimithebrain 11-13-2005 11:24 AM

Lol!

While the moderators are all here, I saw an actual banning going on with "Xpression" (for obvious reasons...), which made me think, how long do the bans last?

BittaBrotha 11-13-2005 12:27 PM

If you're willing to pay, give Linspire a shot. About as easy as Windows. I believe you can try it out, at least the livecd version.

Ubuntu, Xandros, or SimplyMepis, to name a few.

acid_kewpie 11-13-2005 12:29 PM

a bans a ban.... there's nothing automated about it, but it's down to saying sorry and meaning it. We try not to discuss things like bans, most members don't need to know they exist, and don't make things feel all too friendly round here.

mimithebrain 11-13-2005 03:33 PM

It's a last resort. I see :)

dlublink 11-13-2005 07:58 PM

What about the performance issues? Does anybody have any thoughts on that? My machine runs really slowly and I have cut everything that I reasonably can.

Here is what is in /etc/init.d/rc5.d/
S01earlysyslog
S01fbset
S01random
S02earlykbd
S03dbus
S03resmgr
S04boot.udev
S04earlykdm
S05network
S06syslog
S07netdaemon
S08mdnsd
S08portmap
S08splash_early
S12alsasound
S12kbd
S12splash
S12sshd
S13hwscan
S13powersaved
S13xdm
S14nscd
S15cron
S16hal

Everything else is either a K k or s.

In inittab I have disabled all the terminals except tty2.

Can anyone else suggest things to tweak in order to improve performance?

When I multitask the most I ever do is music/mozilla/eclipse/gaim.

Get a distro like www.archlinux.org. It's a piece of cake to get it running and it's real fast.
Read the documents (if there are any.. I never needed to look something up because it is all so easy) to find out how to configure it.

do pacman -S mplayer
and the mplayer plugin , alsa, etc etc etc and you got your multimedia set up.

Use the icewm window manager with the silverxp theme (find it with google and extract to /usr/share/icewm/themes/), and you'll feel at home. And it's very fast as well.

If you want a nice automated menu then get debian testing distro instead of arch.. the only difference is that debian starts slower.

Thats not suse it's fault, because those codecs are propriate software.

configure the resolution with SAX will do the trick. anti-alliasing is fully supported in suse.

thats not suse's fault, RTM is the best solution to solve YOUR problems it's not suse's problem.

Learn more about linux, linux aint windows. and RTM.
You are shortsighted to blame suse bacause something doesn't work as you expected.

SuSE 10.0

Thanks in advance,
your welcome

BTW I run SuSE 9.3 on a 750MHZ 256MB RAM with 30GB harddrive.
I am building LFS browse the web with firefox playing mp3's with amarok all on KDE.

Linux has a high learning curve even with linspire, not everything can be done with the mouse. It takes some time a couple of months to get used to it and find your way in linux.
It took me 3 months to get used to it and starting to understand whats under the hood.
In the end you are the winner and laugh at MS. With linux you have full control of your system.

Sorry to see that you think otherwise, Linux is Linux no matter which distro you use, in the end you still use linux with the same base.

thats why it's very low to blame SuSE that it didn't met you expectations.

jack.s-suse 11-23-2005 08:00 PM

for the speed issue try installing a lighter WM like XFCE or icewm
