Must find Distro that will work with my Sound Card

I have a 5 year old machine (3 G single-core CPU) which had Win 2K and now has Arch. On Windows it recorded sound just fine. With Arch, alsa doesn't have sound output and while oss does, I can't get any input from the mic--I tried two mics (regular, not USB) that I know work.

So I am wondering if I should try another distro. It must install from a USB b/c the CD is dead, but I think any will do that. I prefer light WM's like Xfce or LXDE. Those are the two I have used.

If I had a spare sound card I would try that but I don't.

Any suggestions?

Exclamation Did you run alsaconfig?

That task is left to the user on some distributions...

Did it find anything?

If not: Does lspci see your sound card? If so, what is it?

Yes I know it is, but I thought maybe some distros handled it better or differently.

Here is the output of that:

Code:

01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82562EZ 10/100 Ethernet Controller (rev 01)
Seems to be
Code:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
Right?
