with possibillity to test own php/mysql/perl scripts?
How would that be done?

I have Slackware, but on my p133 and p3 866 it won't install.
I get the "kernel panic: attempted to kill init"
dunno why, I tried several (also earlier red hat distro; same thing.)
Is it because it's IBM pc's?

anyway.. back to my question.
Those that know Smoothwall: Is that the most secure linux firewall available?
If not, what is?

Is there possibillity to include PHP and MySQL on that server, so i, within the green interface, can test own scripts, by uploading and run there?

If not too much to ask, what would be exactly the nessesary packages, with interface like Smoothwall, and SSH, FTP, mailserver, PHP4, mysql it must be the most stable and secure version out?

In short: What I would like to know, is what packages i need to get the most secure firewall as possible, AND so it act as a webhoster as the ones on the internet, but only for local computers (exept maybe for the mailserver)?
All the packages must be the newest, most stable and secure versions.
A active virusscanner would be great.

Does such a distro exist?
If not. Can it be made?
I prefer a webinterface (as GUI enviroments has security issues, like windows, just not as many :P).
If webinterface will mean custom job, it isn't required, but wanted.
I don't know much about repackaging, but will go into it, if I coudn't convince one of you to build it for me, and either:

A: send by mail, (of course the cost will be covered) or
B: send to email.

But as long I know, exactly what packages to get, much will be easier.
I dunno if it's possible to install the webserver, mysql, mailserver etc. on existing smoothwall (or what you suggest)

Hope kind souls would help me out, as a combined server AND firewall will make it easier to have 1 than 2 pc's running.
If the only or best solution is to have 1 pc running firewall and another to run webserver, that can be done, but not preferred. But security is the mainpriority.

So simply: The best of the best.

A compabillity issue? How do I correct that?
I intend to use the P3 server for the firewall (with 2 netcards)

Install apache/php/mysql/etc....
Verify that the apache config is set to localhost so that when you visit 127.0.0.1 in the web browser, it shows the website on the local PC.

It's probably not because its an IBM, but rather some chipset that has poor support. It might be possible that the support just isn't built into the kernel. Can you run a Live CD on either of those machines?

My answer is going to suck, but it is the correct answer. Security only exists if you setup the rules, test them, hack at your own machine, re-create rules, check logs, run scans against it, and monitor the machine. Even then you can be comprimised. Smoothwall is good, we use checkpoint at work, I use slackware and iptables scripts at home. It depends on the level of paranoia you possess.

Not sure.

Linux from scratch would satisfy those requirements.

I haven't tested a liveCD yet, but will do as soon as I can.
On the older laptop I have, I did try the livecd of Slax, but it freeze.
And it haven't made the "kill init" part when I tried installing slack 10.0 (but had too little space on the HD).

Where can I pick the packages I want to dl and compile?
I haven't (as said) tried to make my own compilation, but have the idea, that theres a place on the internet, where I can tick off what I want to download (ie. php, mysql, iptables etc.)
Or where do I get the single packages from, to make a own distro?


I do have 1 more question:
I am in progress of creating a PHP/MySQL based complex proggy, for toolsetup etc. at my work.
So my question is:
What distro should I choose, that has both php and mysql in a GUI as I am going to run ie. conquer browser (KDE) on the machine, to avoid usage of 2 machines.
The request is a bit similar to the 1st question, however firewall isn't needed as it won't be run on a network.
Is there a allready built distro for this, or should I also make my own for that?

Please provide me with a link to a place/places where they update frequently, so they always show latest versions.
Please also, if not same place, provide me with a link to older versions, in case the current is too new to run on older pc's.

I have used SmoothWall for a little over a year now... and it works great.. I regularly monitor the logs, and run Nessus scans(among others) against it... no problems..
