Most minimal distro WITH X.org 7
I'd like to boot up, get into X, and have practically nothing else. And I seriously mean nothing else. I don't want any extraneous libraries. I don't want xine. I don't want freetype. I don't want any media players. I don't want copious amounts of text editors. I don't want e-mail, or chat, or newsgroups, or etc etc etc etc.
I want to just use my computer until I need something, THEN install it. I honestly feel like Windows did a great job at that (for the wrong reasons) and I loved it. Windows didn't come with diddly dick and let me pick my own apps for my own purposes. Thanks! |
You can easily get a very minimal install with Debian.

Download yourelf a debian netinstall cd, then you will be able to install the absolute minimum number of packages. Then apt-get yourself xorg and a minimal window manager like blackbox. You will have nothing. No office suite no email, internet or hardly anything else. This is how I normally start out, and then build up the packages I need.

You could always use freebsd as well. Like Debain, it does a net install, But FreeBSD is a TON faster (If you have ever used FreeBSD you know what I mean). I love linux, but if you've never had the FreeBSD experience, you NEED to.
