minimum live cd distro to check ping

Hi,
we Provide internet over LAN here& im the head main admin.
Im looking for a "bare minimum "LIVE cd distro that can be booted OFF a CD,, automatilly Probes the ethernet card & Assigns it a Static IP 172.16.0.10 / 255.255.0.0 . this is how my network is setup over static IP's.

sometimes there is a problem of corrupt Files or other software level Corruption at User's End. so in that case i can just Boot OFF this Live cd-- check the Ping status of the machine & conclude if its just a Sofware Level Problem or there is a Hardware Fault over the NIC or the Wire etc..

I w'd Like the ditro to be as small as possible .. NO X nor any other modules other than latest NIC drivers are needed. can someone Point me to such a Distro.

This is probably something you'll have to do yourself.
I would do a minimal slackware install, compile your own kernel with all the PCI netcards as modules, enable hotplug, and then head over to the slax live cd site to get some guidance on how to work from there.

I can't think of a live cd that would be set up in this manner already for you, although I'd bet Knoppix-STD would come close. You'd still have to enter the IP yourself, of course.

Another option is to modify an existing one, like morphix or knoppix, or slax -- most of these sites have information on user modification as well.

Do you really need a cd for that? You could fit those requirements on a floppy!

Check out http://www.toms.net/rb/

slattach sleep sln sort split stab strings swapoff swapon sync tail tar tcic
tee telnet telnetd termcap test tomshexd tomsrtbt.FAQ touch traceroute true
tune2fs umount undeb-- unpack.s unrpm-- update utmp vi vi.help view watch
wc wget which xargs xirc2ps_cs yecho yes zcat
You could also burn this as a bootable CD. Instructions can be found at http://www.toms.net/rb/tomsrtbt.FAQ

Hope this helps.. it's probably among the smallest you'll find with this capability!
