Mandrake / Corel

Does anyone know if once can use Mandrake 8.2's update option to upgrade an old Corel Linux OS from 2000?
(Currently trying to get Mandrake to work for me on Toshiba Tecra 550CDT, but unsuccessful so far.)

Do you mean you want it to get the packages for Corel, and install those? Kind of like just installing Mandy's Upgrade tool on a corel box, and then going from there?

I don't see why not, as long as you had the supporting libraries/files to install it. Alot of the time it wants files that look like this: 'file.2.4mdk.i586.rpm'. Notice the mdk in the filename, this may cause you some problems if there is something specific in the 'mdk' file that isn't in a regular version of the file.

The best way to find out though, would be to give it a try.

If they had RPM installed, then why wouldn't they be able to? It's sort of graphical front end to a graphical front end (kpackage, or similar) to rpm command line (or at least it would seem to be). So as long as they had the "supporting" files, why wouldn't it work?

because there would be no rpm database, not a single dependency would be satisfied, everything would be incompatible - it would never work.

I know about the dependencies, and addressed that. But if they had RPM installed wouldn't there be an "rpm" database? In the unlikely even they actually wanted to install it, couldn't they "satisfy" those rpms and it would work?

I guess I am missing something... I understand the RPM thing. But if they have it installed, satisfied ALL dependencies, could they not then have a working program? Or would there be just too many dependencies to be satisfied? Like eventually they'd be installing over half the disc, or more? I see how it would be a "pain" but I don't see how it "would never work".

It has an RPM db, only packages loaded via RPM are in it, and all corel-supplied stuff is loaded via dpkg

So the dependencies, as they were satisfied (if by RPM) would be in the database then...

Even the RPM's that would be pulled from the disc to satisfy the dependencies? If RPM were installed?

well you would have an EMPTY database, everything would need upgrading. EVERYTHING. and there would be no easy way to upgrade, you would have to remove the old packages and then install the new ones, which would often be near impossible.
