Mandrake Community ruling on: make xconfig with linux-2.4.21-0.18mdk

When invoking this command during the kernel upgrade process (after: make mrproper)

[root@localhost /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.18mdk]# make xconfig
rm -f include/asm
( cd include ; ln -sf asm-i386 asm)
if [ -f .need_mrproper ]; then
rm .need_mrproper;
make mrproper;
make preconfig;
make -C scripts
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.18mdk/scripts'
cat >> ./
./tkparse < ../arch/i386/ >>
drivers/net/ 193: unknown command
make[1]: *** [] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.21-0.18mdk/scripts'
make: *** [xconfig] Error 2

The following offending line is in at 193:

define_mbool CONFIG_EEPRO100_PIO y

when replaced by:

define_bool CONFIG_EEPRO100_PIO y

whereby: mbool :is replaced by: bool :xconfig works.

Does anyone have a more comprehensive explanation as to if one should do this or not? This suggestion appeared on google. rma/2003-May/001945.html

I'm unsure as to the details of this message... elaboration for the record?

Followup: make menuconfig

It seems there's a problem configuring alsa with menuconfig, which the .log file of changes through mandrake RPM install fails to account:

Upon being in make menuconfig, editing the alsa configuration, one happens upon this error. Please note, the changelog for this .18 kernel reports alsa issues have been resolved... is anyone also getting this same error?

Menuconfig has encountered a possible error in one of the kernel's
configuration files and is unable to continue. Here is the error

Q> scripts/Menuconfig: line 832: MCmenu73: command not found

Please report this to the maintainer <>. You may also
send a problem report to <>.

Please indicate the kernel version you are trying to configure and
which menu you were trying to enter when this error occurred.

make: *** [menuconfig] Error 1

I have loaded the new Kernel by downloading it and using KPackage. urpmi did not work because my kernel has been "tainted" by nVidia! I also set up the new kernel-source

It works but I cannot get the nVidia network/sound drivers to work with it (using the *.tar.gz). The nVidia video driver does work, however. I had to set LILO up to boot from the old kernel to stay online!

I am only concerned because the new kernel promises improved Firewire support and I am thinking of getting a Digital Camcorder and adding a PCI firewire card. Otherwise I wouldn't care that much...
