Mandrake 9.1 - Delay in runnning programs.

Every time i click on an icon, it takes 1-2 seconds for the program to appear regardless of what it is. It just came about recently. Does anyody know how to fix it?

edit: It happens also if you open something several times. i.e. if i already have 1 Konqueror window open, and i open another one, that one also takes 1-2 seconds to appear. And it also happens if i try to run something from bash, and also when XFree86 isn't loaded.

Specs:
-Mandrake 9.1
-KDE
-Athlon XP 200
-768 megs of DDR Ram
-more cool stuff....

edit2: Oh, and now that I've already done a thread, does anybody know how to get Gaim 0.64 to show the nicknames instead of the email adress in the buddy list? I did it in 0.58 but now the option is gone. I'm talking about msn contacts.

Hi Xerpex

The 1-2 seconds to load an application in Mandrake 9.1 seems pretty typical to me - I am

Intel Celeron 1.7ghz OC'd to 1.92ghz
256mb Ram
Intel 845 GE chipset
Mandrake 9.1, Red Hat 9, Win 95/98se
KDE (for both Mandrake and Red Hat)

I have one box for dual booting Mandrake and Red Hat and another for dual booting Mandrake and Win98se - Mandrake is slightly slower than Win98se in app loading times but slightly quicker than Red Hat - that's what I find anyway.

Perhaps you could try disabling some of the background services in Mandrake - There's definately a section in the Mandrake control centre - I think its in the "system" section - where you can tick checkboxes to indicate what programs/services you want loaded at startup etc - that might help a little.

Thanks, I looked into the services and saw many that I don't need.
Well, thats one thing Windows does better, Windows Server 2003 has nearly no delay in running programs.

Note: Do not turn off the Network service, it starts the lo 127.0.0.1 loopback interface which is needed by many KDE apps, especially when you're online it seems.
