Mandrake 9.1 = no sound, anyone else have this problem?
I just installed Mandrake 9.1 and the first thing I notice is that there is no sound (which is weird, Mandrake's hardware autodetection usually was good in their past releases). I tried modprobe emu10k1, no dice, can not be found, I searched for it myself, the module is named snd-emu10k1, modprobe snd-emu10k1 it loads the module, but still no sound. I have tried changing the permissions for /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer no luck still.
Anyone have this problem?
So far, my experience with this new version has been less than satisfying.
EDIT: Alright I got the sound to work. It was the mixer, most of the volume was not set right.
But I still have problems with this version.
Like I can not just hold the space bar (or backspace) to advance or delete multiple letters/numerals/characters.
This version is much harder to use then Mandrake 9.0 (I do not mind that much, but mandrake is posed to be a newbie friendly Linux OS) from my first impression of it.
EDIT #2: Nevermind, problem solved... Hmm. This version is not that bad.

I have this same problem. Could you please post exactly how you fixed this?
I have messed around with the mixer, but with no luck.
Thanks

THANK YOU, Seph64!!!!
I just installed 9.1 and had the same no sound problem. I tried everything to get sound, with no results.
I came here, opened up aumix, presto, it worked!
Again, thank you so much! Now my 9.1 install is perfect.

I noticed some nice things that 9.1 did that 9.0 did not. For instance, installing java automagically added the vm to the .bashrc file. The Mplayer is indestructable. I am disapointed with the version of wine. Where is the handy wine tool kit that other distros have (suse)? However the new galeon does not have the "about plugins" pulldown. Why bloody not? I know this is not Mandy's problem but just venting. My biggest problem was getting Kazaa to run in wine on 9.1. It really didn't want to. Nice fonts in 9.1, very impressive. I still recomend 9.1 highly. Love this forum, Cheers.

I have indeed tried to run Kazaa lite in wine. I have no problems with it on 9.0 whatsoever. I am running it now. Runs for weeks without a crash. Getting it to run on 9.1 was a futile task. The wine issued with Bamboo is too much work to even set up (unless i am missing something). I have a beautiful rpm of wine and the winesetuptk that someone posted somwhere. I have set up this wine and kazaa on five 9.0 machines and they all work beautifully. This version doesn't seem to work on Bamboo (for what ever reason) and i can't even install the simplist of winblows apps. The version that ships with Bamboo sets up a fake windows drive in /var/lib/wine as does winesetuptk but in the fake windows system directory there is only four .dlls where there should be over a hundred. I didn't check if they were elsewhere and linked. I do not think they were. I tried for months to get kazaa to run on the wine shipped with 9.0 (it looks exactly the same) with no success until i used a newer version of wine that was set up with winesetuptk. I did have to use some native windows .dlls and edit the wine config file but it was really easy to do. I am using kazaalite 1.72. Cheers.

melrhombus, what is your hardware, and what have you tried doing already? Can you be a little more specific?

I had the problem that I could get the sound if I unmuted aumix but once I rebooted it would go back to muted. Check my post at Mandrakeuser.org board for how I fixed this problem.

Kind of ticked me off that something so basic as having usable sound would cause such a problem in such a slick distro. I use Debian now but was looking to go back to Mandrake if 9.1 was a noticable improvement. Debian still wins.

No Sound
melrhombus,
I've got 82801EB AC'97 on board my Intel D865GBF motherboard.
I also have no sound. I've tried adjusting both Aumix and Kmix with no luck. Have you been able to solve your sound problem? Sounds like we have similar audio hardware. Thought what ever works for you might work for me.
