hmm, well it's taken ALL day to download them images, not been able to find a quiet server anywhere...

one slightly strange thing about the distro is that they're using 2.4.18, instead of a more trusted one... wonder how much testing they did with it...? That's the same kernel i've been using for a few weeks now tho, so i guess it's ok. good thing about that kernle tho is that they've dumped that stupid stupid stupid "welcome" logo on boot. so annoying. no tux tho, oh well.

Well, there goes the neighborhood! I see you are a Mandrake user for sometime now. Is that just preference? I'm glad the welcome screen is gone, I could only read the english one anyhow! welcomen? Anyhowyoudoit...Is it worth the effort? I can't see why they'd even release an 8.2. Are there really enough changes or is it just the same distro with all of the bugfixes?

well i started using mandrake when i first started out cos i got it on a magazine. Once i got more into it i got newer versions of mandrake, and upgraded, cos it was easier. i've outgrown all the pretty config apps and stuff, but it's just nice to be able to lean on them when one is feeling lazy. And just having a vast amount of updates ready and waiting for you, AND not have to fart around with dependencies is really handy. that's the best thing about mandrake as far as packages go, as they use the urpm system very extensively, and automatically do the deps for you. Once i get out of uni and have some time i'm gonna go hardcore and LFS it i think, or at least get slack. till then tho, when i can't really justify being so anal what with uni and stuff getting in the way i'm sticking with mandrake.

I've noticed recently the number of packages that primarily are for mandrake. a few months back it was a hassle finding mdk rpms but now so many authors compil rpms for mdk and NOT redhat... doesn't seem to be stopping mandrake going down the toilet tho!

I'm with u kewpie, I think mandrake is the best thing next to apple pie. My Admin Sup introduced it to me awhile back and I haven't been able to try anything else; but as soon as I hit expert with mandrake...I think I might try LFS or Slackware.

Were u able to download the new 8.2 ?

I gotcha...That's cool and if I used Mandrake i'd probably know more about the rpm support, but I just get a little gun-shy with binaries these days. Especially the ones made for Slackware. Some of them have really hosed things up because they weren't built right etc...So I'm stuck with source, which is fine when everything compiles, but that's not always the case either. I do like Mandrake and believe that they've really done some good work there. It was my first distro (7.0) also. To each their own and if one day (which is every other day) I get too frustrated configging files, I think it would be the first to go on the computer. I don't see alot of these others that are coming out, lasting too long. Lycoris? Lindows...Nope, don't tink so....

Whatever happened with that Corel distribution? I remember it got such raving reviews, but anytime I ask who's using it, all I hear is crickets chirping <shrug>.

That just make me mad!!!!!! Not that I wasn't already but i'm in jct842's boat with a crappy 56k conn. Can you believe that neither Cable nor DSL in anyform is available in this neighborhood? What the hey! I'm in a technologically neutered area! Sure i could spend a buttload on a Satellite system but those aren't all that great anyhow, ISDN isn't worth the reaming costs and even a 56k fractional T1 is hundreds to mainatain a month. Grr...

Ok, anyhow, I was one who bought Corel, it did suck pretty good (in a bad way). It's fallen by the wayside for a while now...They should stick to their Office and Graphical products.

I just remember reading reviews on http://www.cnet.com that praised it as the best thing since sliced bread:
Quote:
Rex Baldazo, a software engineer for CNET, championed Corel Linux, our favorite consumer distribution of the OS.
Don't worry, I took it with a grain of sand.
